Life Is Simple.

Lets be honest; life is very simple. We may have all these complex technologies, iPads and iPhones with however-many applications but to live a happy, healthy life all we need are the simple things. In many ways, I prefer the simple things; reading books, going to the beach and walking my dog through the cornfields on a summers day.

Imagine life around hundred years ago. All that those people know about were doing the housework (no hoovers, dishwashers etc.), re-reading battered hardback books and sewing. Sometimes, my mind wanders and I wonder what it would have been like to live in those centuries where ladies were never to show their ankles!

After watching Amish: The World's Squarest Teenagers on Channel 4 on Sunday (UK) it occured to me how different ,and in some ways wrong, how young adults actually spend their time and behave. I'm not sure if anyone else watched it as most people my age would probably have been out drinking not watching a documentry on teenagers that believe in the very simple, simple life. I first came across people that were Amish, whilst I was reading a book by Jodi Picoult called Plain Truth and as I was interested to learn more I watched the first of four programmes on television.
Anyway back to the point. The Amish live so simply it is how people lived in the 17th century. They do not have transport, only horse and cart, they do not drink alcohol, smoke or go out 'clubbing'. The Amish do not watch television or have any technologies such as laptops, mobiles or i-pods. They work on their farms all day, handmake their own clothes and do not wear make-up or cut their hair.

They believe God made them like this so they should stay that way. Although their lives are very different to ours, they still have the same principles and are very happy...living simply.

Although I love using my laptop, mobile etc. and without technologies I would not be writing (well typing) this post because Blogger wouldn't exist!

Wouldn't it be nice though to not be judged by what your wear, look like or do?

Wouldn't it be nice to have days just walking under the summer sun with family and friends with not a care in the world?

Wouldn't it be nice to be written a letter and not be sent a quick e-mail?!

Even though, we have technologies and aeroplanes and cars etc. etc. We still live simply by reading books or even watching television on a night time.

What do you love to do which is simple?

  2. i think you are idealizing the amish too much. i live right beside amish country and let me tell you, they are not all as old-fashioned as you may think. many amish have cell phones for "business" and then some of the teens go out and buy cell phones and ipods and "english" clothes that they have to hide from their parents. once at walmart i saw a group of amish girls buying bikinis. and some of them have tractors for business and many others, although they don't drive, get rides with modern people to get to and from work, stores, etc. Don't get me wrong, the amish are overall a good group of people, but they aren't always that idyllic picture of the 1700s.

  3. Simplicity in life just doesnt exist any more Becca :( Even walking in the cornfields, you have your mobile with you which interupts the walk with a text you have to answer, reading can inspire us to blog and even just sitting watching the sun set can be interrupted by an impromptune chav music booming in the background.

A M.G Bennett said 'the 21st century is the tieme of self importance and invited perverts.'

    Deep eh? x

  4. @Maja - Thank You :)

@Mily - Thank You for the comment :) I 'suppose they do not all live the same but the point I'm trying to get across is they live simpler than us haha.

@Hollie - As a friend I just have to disagree. Simplicity in life does still exist. It just depends on how you do it. You can go and sit and watch the sun in the middle of the field: no music will interupt you and answering a text can be ignored. :)

Anyway thank you's for commenting x
